The competition was created in 1954 by members of the « Comité de la Foire des Vins de France« .

The first year, 68 samples were tasted. The number of samples increased over the years, reaching 450 in 1964, 1,200 in 1970, about 4,000 in 1975 and about 10,000 in the last twenty years. In 1989, the competition was listed in the GUINNESS Book of RECORDS for the largest tasting ever held in the world: 10,520 samples.

The competition takes place every year in April, only samples of wines with the AOP appellation from all wine regions selected by a jury to award medals to the best of them.

Participation of the tasters

On the day of the competition, about 2,000 tasters from all regions of France, and even from abroad, will taste the wines blind and then score them. The jurors are selected according to precise criteria, as :

Belong to the wine industry,
Have undergone training in wine tasting,
Be a member of a tasting club
Participate in other competitions.

The 3 best wines of each appellation category receive a medal (gold, silver or bronze) and a diploma. These medals are represented on stickers that can be put on the bottles of the medal-winning wine. The official stickers are available for sale from the competition organizer.
